Utopia

Utopia

Individuals who know me know I have always been a big Sci-fi geek, and enjoy most anything in the genre. Friends have often told me they wish we lived in the Star Trek universe. In that universe, everyone has a job, there is no homelessness, and everyone is provided for. They look forward to a future day when we gain the means to do that, and it is a valid desire.

I personally disagree. I am not waiting for the day we attain that goal, because in my opinion we can already reach it. America currently has the means--with education, science, and provisions--to get the homeless off the street. We make key decisions every day that keep us from realizing this world. Ask yourself, why do sports stars get paid obscenely high salaries, and where does the majority of that money go? The same goes for music, movies and other “entertainment” industries. How much funding and research goes into luxury drugs for erectile dysfunction, Botox, and other science that has no real positive effect on the community, but only provide a questionable enhancement to our own lives? This is a great deal of energy put into vanity venues, when it could do so much for education, jobs, and infrastructure, which has a direct, positive affect on the homeless.

Think about what you really need to make a change, what you can honestly afford, and make a donation to Macpack to help build this movement. We strive to live our lives in a sustainable way that works for us. Each individual has to find his or her own balance. No one is the same, but one thing we all have in common is that we live in a country where there is an excess being completely wasted. I don’t want to be a part of that problem, and I hope you don’t either.
